MN sues Trump administration over attempts to link grants to immigration enforcement

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Nearly two dozen Democratic state attorneys general, including Minnesota’s Keith Ellison, are suing over President Donald Trump’s executive orders linking some federal grants to immigration enforcement.

Two lawsuits were filed Tuesday looking to block the Trump administration’s efforts to force states with sanctuary city policies to cooperate with immigration enforcement or not receive money for disaster relief, cybersecurity and transportation.

“Decisions about how police resources should be allocated to maintain public safety are made at the local level because every community has different safety needs. It is both wrong and unlawful for the Trump Administration to demand Minnesota law enforcement step away from their patrols, investigations, and community-engagement work to instead enforce federal immigration law,” Ellison said.

“Obey the law, respect the law, and don’t obstruct federal immigration officials and law enforcement officials when they are simply trying to remove public safety threats from our nation’s communities,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said after Trump signed the executive order.
