BISMARCK, ND – Fresh off a Republican National Committee meeting, North Dakota Republican Party Chairwoman Sandi Sanford says a lot of good things are happening within the Republican faction in North Dakota.
Redistricting took place earlier this year. Sanford said there are several new District chairs throughout the state. Although the role does not pay, she said there are a lot of things that the chairs do. For example, they take direction from the state party, which takes its direction from the national party.
Several tragedies have struck during Sanford’s time as chairwoman – from the passing of Senator Doug Larsen in a plane crash to Representative Josh Christie’s passing earlier this year, followed by the hospitalization of Representative Jim Kasper – and last week, the passing of Representative Cindy Schreiber-Beck.
“Every loss in tragic,” Sanford said. “We did put out a nod and a thank you to the lawmakers that served during the legislative session. And a nod to their families, because this isn’t easy.”
The Republican Party continues to look to add new members, and it all starts at a local level – which is the party’s expectation, Sanford said.
“At a state level, it’s time for the GOP to make districts great again,” she said. “it is our responsibility to train up not just the chairs, but the executive group.”
In June, a Roundup event will be held, which will feature the election of the state executive committee and leadership positions. Additionally, there will be proposals coming forward, which Sanford expects many will be submitted by the May 29 deadline.
