Rep. Fedorchak wants answers from Homeland Security for naming seven ND counties ‘sanctuary jurisdictions’

BISMARCK, N.D. – Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak is disappointed with the Department of Homeland Security for naming seven North Dakota counties “sanctuary jurisdictions” calling it untrue.

Billings, Golden Valley, Grant, Morton, Ramsey, Sioux and Slope counties are accused of not helping federal law enforcement with enforcing immigration law.

“I immediately started asking questions of DHS, The White House. They’ve since pulled that report off of their website. We asked what on Earth was the criteria for that? Not cooperating with ICE, the Border Patrol and federal law is not allowed in North Dakota. We have very strict laws that prevent that,” Fedorchak explained.

“These North Dakota counties strongly believe that this is misinformation and a mischaracterization of how they uphold the rule of law in North Dakota,” the North Dakota Sheriff’s and Deputies Association said in a statement. “They have worked well with their federal partners and routinely interact with the U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement as well as the U.S. Border Patrol on immigration and other criminal matters.”

Fedorchak said she’s met with Sheriffs who are thrilled about the Trump administration’s border policies and are grateful to get a response from Border Patrol when they need help.

“I think it was just a flawed study and analysis and I’m looking forward to answers from them [Homeland Security],” Fedorchak said.
