Ray Holmberg transferred to federal prison in Rochester, Minn.

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Federal Bureau of Prisons information shows disgraced former State Senator Ray Holmberg of Grand Forks has been transferred to the Federal Medical Center in Rochester, Minnesota.

The prison is for men who need specialized or long-term medical or mental health care.

Holmberg was in the Sherburne County Jail in Elk River, Minnesota before and after he was sentenced to 10 years in prison on federal sex tourism charges. He traveled to Prague, Czech Republic to have sex with a boy.

The 81-year-old spent more than 45 years in the North Dakota legislature.

Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert spent 13 months at the same facility Holmberg is in starting in 2016 after pleading guilty to a federal structuring charge for changing bank withdrawals to evade bank reporting requirements.

A charge of lying to the FBI was dropped.  Prosecutors say Hastert got the money to use as hush money to cover up his sexual misconduct of children.
