Strawberry moon; active LRC cycle coming; summer warmth returns

COLORFUL STRAWBERRY MOON: The June full “Strawberry” Moon will rise Tuesday evening across North America. This particular full Moon is going to be unique. It will be the lowest we’ll witness until 2043. Put another way, the arc track it will take across the sky will be unusually low on the horizon.

This has significant implications as to what you’ll see. Normally, low horizon Moons appear orange as the light passes through more atmosphere. As it rises higher in the sky, it quickly turns that typical white color we always see.

That won’t quite happen with this one. The lower arc will keep an orange/reddish hue for longer. Not only that, wildfire smoke in the air will only add to that color. For many of you, this will likely be as good a time as any to be able to see/photograph the Moon tinged with color.

After tonight’s strawberry moon, we start to see signs of summer warmth returning as we look into next week.  Along with the summer warmth returning, the active part of the LRC cycle will commence with numerous rounds of storms, some severe, from mid month through the end of the month.   Here’s a look at 3 different models precip accumulation.  Note, there is quite the spread as is typical with storms.

How could ONE model predict less than 1″ of rain and the other one more than 3″ over the next 10 days?  It all depends on where the thunderstorms track.  Typically we fall somewhere in between.   The thing to note is the models are all picking up on a more active pattern, which is right on track with the LRC cycle but the question is how much rain?   Stay tuned…..
