TOKIO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – The trial for a man accused of killing several members of his family on the Spirit Lake Reservation is now scheduled for November.

Johnnie Gaking has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of attempted murder for the shooting of his mother, sister and his niece in Tokio, ND on Tuesday, March 4th.

Gaking’s sister, Tiana Sharel Walking Eagle, and her 3-year-old daughter, Lokie, both died in the shooting. According to court documents, another family member reported hearing three shots fired, and while Gaking went to reload, he ran for his life.

The trial was scheduled to begin June 3, 2025. But in early May, defense counsel requested the trial be pushed back to further investigate, review discovery, and prepare for the trial. The court granted that motion, and the trial is now set to begin on Tuesday, Nov. 18 in Fargo. They expect the trial to last ten days.
