Washington, D.C. – President Trump is calling the U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites “a spectacular military success” and is now putting the onus on Iran to come to the table for a peace agreement.
During an address to the nation from the White House hours after the operation took place, Trump says the three facilities targeted were “completely and totally obliterated.”
Trump says the U.S. had to put a “stop to the nuclear threat” from Iran, and warned of more action on additional targets if the country balks at peace talks.
“This cannot continue,” Trump said. “There will be either peace or greater tragedy for Iran.”
“If peace does not come quickly, we will go after those targets with speed, precision and skill.”
Trump first revealed the news about the military operation on TruthSocial.
The president said the strikes targeted three nuclear sites in Iran including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.
“All planes are now outside of Iran air space,” wrote Trump in the post. “A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home.”
Prior to the operation, multiple B-2 stealth bombers were headed to Guam on Saturday.
ABC News reports the B-2 bombers carried out the strike along with several dozen other aircraft.
North Dakota Republican Senator John Hoeven, who is a member of the Senate Defense Appropriations Committee, said “Iran must never have nuclear weapons.”
Hoeven said the move was made “after Iran refused to negotiate an end to its nuclear program.”
“We support these strikes, which protect our national security and help defend our ally Israel,” wrote Hoeven.
“We especially salute the skills and courage of our service members who planned and executed these strikes and who always work to keep us safe and free.”
North Dakota Republican Senator Kevin Cramer also issued a statement.
“The Islamic Republican of Iran is more than a nuisance,” Cramer wrote. “It is a dangerous animal that must be stopped.”
