WASHINGTON – The Senate has passed President Trump’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” in a 51 to 50 vote as Vice President JD Vance cast the tiebreaking vote.
Republicans worked through the night as they resolved differences that would be needed to fund the bill’s tax cuts.
All Democrats voted against the legislation and were joined by Republican Senators Rand Paul of Kentucky, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Susan Collins of Maine. Tillis announced he’s not running for reelection after voting against the bill in a procedural motion over the weekend.
The House is now expected to take up the amended bill with a self-imposed July 4th deadline to hold a final vote and approve the measure. President Trump appears to be showing signs of flexibility on the date of passage.
“I’d love to do July 4th, but I think it’s very hard to do July 4th,” Trump told reporters on the South Lawn on Tuesday, saying that final passage could now be “somewhere around there.”
“We are aligning federal spending with North Dakota pragmatism—slashing Green New Deal gimmicks, boosting reliable energy sources, delivering unprecedented resources to the border, and bringing defense efforts like the Golden Dome and nuclear modernization to fruition,” Republican North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer said.
“This legislation delivers on promises made by President Trump, including securing the border, investing in our military, empowering American energy dominance and supporting our farmers and ranchers. These are the priorities that will make our nation more prosperous and more secure,” Republican North Dakota Senator John Hoeven said.
“Republicans in the Senate passed a bill that will increase our debt, take away healthcare, and raise grocery prices — all to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy. This is a betrayal of the American people,” Democratic Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar wrote on X.
