Supreme Court to hear arguments on states’ transgender athlete bans

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court agrees to hear a case on whether states can ban transgender students from being on sports teams matching their gender identity.

Justices say they will hear appeals from Republican leaders in West Virginia and Idaho who will defend bans in their states.

A decision on the case is expected to be made by next summer.

In 2023 former North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum signed a bill into law prohibiting transgender girls and women from participating in girls’ sports.

Several high school softball players have sued Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison in hopes of forcing him to remove transgender athletes from their sport.
