Federal gov’t appeals ruling for DAPL protest costs

NORTH DAKOTA – The federal government is appealing a $28 million court ruling ordering it to reimburse the state of North Dakota for costs tied to Dakota Access Pipeline protests.

This follows a previous ruling from a federal judge that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers mishandled the situation on federal land.

The state argues it was forced to cover public safety expenses.

The protests happened in 2016 and 2017 involving thousands of people and led to hundreds of arrests.

The Justice Department has until mid-August to file its appeal.
