Seattle’s Raleigh becomes first catch to win MLB Home Run Derby

Seattle’s Cal Raleigh hit 54 home runs over three rounds en route to becoming the first catcher to win the home run derby on Monday night in Atlanta’s Truist Park. Raleigh is only the second Mariner to win the derby, joining Ken Griffey Jr. who won it three times between 1994 and 1999.

Minnesota’s Byron Buxton made it to the semifinals before falling to Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero. Buxton is the first Twins player to participate in the derby since Miguel San did so in 2017. Additionally, Justin Morneau is still the only Twin to win the HRD, doing so in 2008 at Yankee Stadium.

First Round: Junior Caminero (21 HR), Oneil Cruz (21 HR), Byron Buxton (20 HR), Cal Raleigh (17 HR), Brent Rooker (17 HR, Eliminated), James Wood (16 HR, Eliminated), Matt Olson (15 HR, Eliminated), Jazz Chisholm Jr. (3 HR, Eliminated)

Second Round: No. 4 Cal Raleigh (19 HR), No. 1 Oneil Cruz (13 HR, Eliminated), No. 2 Junior Caminero (8 HR), No. 3 Byron Buxton (7 HR, Eliminated)

Championship: Cal Raleigh (18 HR), Junior Caminero (15 HR, Eliminated)
