State rests at Nicole Mitchell burglary trial as defense presents case

Detroit Lakes, M.N. – Prosecutors rested their case Wednesday afternoon at the burglary trial of Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell.

The state called 11 witnesses over the course of the first two days of the trial.

The defense is now presenting their own witness testimony, which began with calling relatives to the stand, including Mitchell’s aunt and stepbrother.

It’s unclear if Mitchell herself will take the stand.

Mitchell is facing felony first-degree burglary and felony possession of burglary or theft tools for allegedly breaking in to her stepmother’s Detroit Lakes home in April 2024.

On the first count, Mitchell could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.  On the latter, the DFL member is looking at a maximum of 3 years behind bars if convicted.
