Detroit Lakes, M.N. – A jury has reached a verdict at the burglary trial of Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell, who was found guilty on all counts.
More than a dozen witnesses testified at trial, including Mitchell herself.
Mitchell testified that she regretted breaking into her stepmother’s home in Detroit Lakes in April 2024, but claims she was there out of concern for her stepmother who suffers from Alzheimer’s.
At the time, Mitchell told police she was there to collect items that belonged to her late stepmother.
During closing arguments, the prosecution again told the jury that Mitchell’s intent was to steal that night.
Mitchell’s defense team admitted that their client told a ‘white lie’ the morning but defended her actions in the moment.
“The problem is that this happened in the context of something that was a terrible mess, a mess that Nicole made. But it was a mess.”
Mitchell faced two counts related to first-degree burglary and the possession of burglary tools.
On the first charge, Mitchell faces a maximum of 20 years in prison. The latter conviction could result in an up to 3 year prison term at sentencing.
