‘The City of Fargo can confirm that a complaint regarding the Communications & Governmental Affairs Department was received in April 2025. The City is actively investigating and has no further comment at this time.’
Update (3:18pm 8/6) The article has been updated with a response from the Fargo’s chief communications officer
Fargo, N.D. – Following the fallout over the way information was relayed to the public about Sunday’s deadly shootings in Fargo, an elected leader says the city’s entire communications department is under an investigation.
City Commissioner Dave Piepkorn confirmed on The Flag on Wednesday that the probe is underway, although he did not know the exact reason why or who is leading the investigation.
“I just heard about it yesterday [Tuesday],” said Piepkorn. “To me, that’s very concerning.”
Pressed further if the probe is connected to the way information was disseminated to the public about the shootings, Piepkorn indicated he’ll begin to do some of his own digging.
“Obviously I’ll be asking some questions,” said Piepkorn.
Flag Family News reached out to the city’s communications team to confirm the investigation is taking place, and, if so, the reason for the probe.
Chief Communications Officer Greg Schildberger provided the following written statement:
I want to unequivocally – and emphatically – acknowledge the commitment and dedication of The City of Fargo’s Communications & Governmental Affairs (CommsGA) Team.
For nearly a decade, CommsGA team members have navigated unprecedented challenges amid several tragic events and have done so tirelessly and with professionalism.
This team is on-call 24/7/365 and remains steadfastly dedicated to the community we serve and the residents of Fargo.
The quality, breadth and accuracy of the work produced for Fargo are the result of the collective passion of these team members and their steadfast devotion to public service.
This work is seen every day in our live meeting broadcasts, press releases, public safety recruitment efforts, website content, public notifications, City apps, open record request responses and public events across this community. Without any hesitation, I will defend the team and its work.
Schilderberg also told Flag Family News that the request for comment has also been relayed to City Administrator Michael Redlinger.
