Teen arrested and accused of having role in June drive-by shooting in Moorhead

Moorhead, Minn. – Police have made an arrest in connection to a drive-by shooting leaving a teenager injured back in June.

Authorities say a 17-year old was taken into custody early Tuesday.

Police say the boy was identified during a routine traffic stop just after midnight in the 500 block of 32nd Avenue South for an equipment violation.

18-year old Azarel Chappell of Moorhead was behind the wheel, and a 17-year old was in the passenger seat.

Police say the passenger was the one recognized as being involved in a June 19th drive-by shooting along 12th Street South.

A nationwide arrest warrant was put out for the boy’s capture.

That warrant was issued for the teenager for allegedly “aiding and abetting the use of a dangerous weapon” during the drive-by.

During a search of the vehicle, cops also found a loaded handgun, which will now undergo forensic testing to see if it was used in the June 19th shooting.

The teen passenger was taken in on the nationwide warrant.

Authorities say the boy’s name cannot be released based on Minnesota’s data privacy laws.

Both Chappell and the 17-yer old passenger were also charged with having a handgun without a permit.

A search continues for the vehicle involved in the June 19th shooting:  a white Chrysler 300 with Minnesota plates EJJ379 has not been located.
