Cass County Sheriff reports scam targeting incarcerated individuals

FARGO, ND — The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says scam artists are targeting those incarcerated at the Cass County Jail.

On Friday, Sheriff Jesse Jahner said scam artists are contacting family members of people incarcerated at the jail and are falsely identifying themselves as a deputy with the Sheriff’s Office. They will, at times, use a spoofed phone number that appears to come from the Cass County Sheriff’s office.

The scam artist claims a nominal payment is required for pre-trial release services and pressures family members to provide money. The sheriff’s office says they believe scammers are utilizing publicly available search platforms to identify those who are incarcerated, then exploiting that information to make what appear to be credible calls.

While alternative corrections are offered, the sheriff’s office says these can only be paid for in cash or by money order in person at the jail. No deputies will contact individuals and ask for payment over the phone.

If you receive a call like this, you’re advised to hang up immediately.
