UPDATE (3: pm 9/5) – Following a standoff for several hours, a man who was holed up in a home in downtown Fargo has been taken into custody.
The public was told to stay away from the 700 block of 2nd Avenue North.
Police say a man, who was known to the residents but was uninvited, went inside a home there and started doing damage.
“We tried to set up a perimeter outside the house just based on the information they gave us. It sounded like he was possibly armed with a hammer and possibly a pocketknife,” Captain Matt Christensen said.
Authorities say nobody has been hurt.
The Red River Valley SWAT Team was also on scene and helped with the arrest.
The home was near Horace Mann Elementary School and the Sanford Health Broadway Clinic.
Fargo Public Schools says students and staff didn’t go outside for recess out of an abundance of caution and everything was normal inside the building.
A Sanford Health spokesperson says staff was told about the situation from police and the clinic didn’t go into lockdown.
SWAT officers were seen armed with guns outside at a home on the 700 block of Second Avenue North.
Police have asked people to avoid the area as authorities attempt to talk a man out of a home.
An officer with a megaphone is asking the person to come out of the house with their hands up because they’re under arrest.
Fargo Police Captain Matt Christensen says authorities responded after the man, who was known to people inside the home, arrived uninvited and began causing damage.
Christensen says the man is possibly armed with a hammer and pocketknife, but says they’re confident the situation is contained to the home and will eventually talk the man out peacefully.
The home isn’t far from Horace Mann Elementary and the Sanford Broadway Clinic. Flag Family News has reached out to Fargo Public Schools and Sanford Health for comment and they didn’t immediately respond
