Regional power operator defends transmission plan

BISMARCK –  Midcontinent Independent System Operator is defending a $22 billion transmission plan challenged by North Dakota and four other states.

The dispute centers on MISO’s cost-benefit analysis for the plan’s second tranche, which includes 24 transmission upgrades.  North Dakota officials argue that MISO altered its methodology to inflate the plan’s benefits, potentially raising utility bills by five-dollars per month for local ratepayers.

MISO maintains the upgrades will bring long-term reliability and economic benefits, returning up to three-dollars-and-fifty-cents for every dollar spent.
