FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Court documents obtained by Valley News Live have provided more details on a September 5 incident where Lena Deoliveira was charged with attempted murder after allegedly hitting her boyfriend in the head with a hatchet.
Police were called to the 700 block of 14 Street North around 5:30 A.M. after a man claimed he had been assaulted with a weapon. When they arrived on scene, the victim told officers he was alone and had been attacked without warning. He was taken to the emergency room.
Another man on scene later told the Fargo Police Adult Violent Crimes team that the victim had been attacked by his girlfriend, Lena Deoliveira. Officers located a blood trail coming from an attached garage, where the man said he was staying, along with the victim and Deoliveira. He says he woke up to the sound of the victim screaming and that Deoliveira was behind the victim with the hatchet. He says that after she struck the victim, she fled the scene.
The victim had to have surgery on his fingers at the emergency room, and officers were shown pictures of the man’s head with a large slice in it. Another photo showed deep lacerations to his fingers.
Deoliveira was arrested in Moorhead, Minnesota on September 7. She requested an attorney when officers attempted to interview her. No information or statement from Deoliveira was noted in the report.
The other man who was on scene at the time of the attack provided more details to investigators later. He says that when he woke up to the screaming, he saw Deoliveira swing down with the hatchet. He couldn’t see what she hit but heard a sound “like splitting wood”. He also says that two of the victim’s fingers were missing or “kind of hanging”, according to court documents.
He suspected that Deoliveira was “out of it”, but came to after hearing the click from the couch’s footrest and seeing the blood.
Deoliveira appeared in Cass County court on September 12. She is charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault. Her next court date is set for October 16.
