McCarthy to miss time; Wentz expected to start

JJ McCarthy expected to miss some time with a sprained ankle. McCarthy suffered a high ankle sprain in Minnesota’s 22-6 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday Night Football.

In the game he took 11 hits in dropbacks and was sacked six times. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Vikings are expecting McCarthy to miss two to four weeks recovering from the injury.

Former North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz is expected to start for Minnesota in his absence. Wentz is a 10-year NFL veteran who is on his sixth team over the past six seasons. He has a 47-46-1 career record while passing for 22,410 yards and 153 touchdowns over 98 games.

Rookie Max Brosmer is currently expected to serve as the backup for the time being.

As of Tuesday, September 16 the Minnesota Vikings have an extended injury report. Eight players are on the IR list in FB CJ Ham, WR Mondale Moore, RB Ty Chandler, C Zeke Correll, RT Matt Nelson, DL Alex Williams, LB Tyler Batty, and LB Blake Cashman. Six players are listed as out in LT Christian Darrisaw, TE Gavin Bartholomew, LB Austin Keys, LB Andrew Van Ginkel, CB Jeff Okudah, and S Harrison Smith. Four players are questionable in QB JJ McCarthy (expected to miss 2-4 weeks), RB Aaron Jones Jr., LT Justin Skule, and C Ryan Kelly. Additionally, WR Jordan Addison is also currently serving a suspension for an off the field incident.

The Vikings host the Joe Burrow-less Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday at noon with game coverage available on CBS. Minnesota will be in Europe for weeks Four and Five playing in Dublin on Sunday, September 28 and London on Sunday, October 5.
