Listen: North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong’s interview with Scott Hennen on The Flag
WATFORD CITY, N.D. – North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong is praising the late Charlie Kirk’s approach to political discourse on college campuses, but also expressed concern about limits to free speech in the wake of the conservative activist’s assassination.
“I always say ‘the best cure for bad speech is always more speech’ because nobody ever taught me who polices the policers,” Armstrong said on The Flag’s What’s On Your Mind?.
“It doesn’t matter who’s in charge. When you’re in charge, if you’re going to censor speech, you’re censoring the opposing viewpoint.”
Asking for clarification on the governor’s comments, Flag Family News reached out Armstrong’s communications director Mike Nowatzki who said the governor was not referring any particular leader, including President Trump or his administration.
During the interview, Armstrong went onto say the world needs more free speech, but that doesn’t mean people shouldn’t be held accountable.
“If somebody says something terrible, I want their community to shun them. What I don’t want is the government to get in the business of putting their foot on the scale because it never works out well,” Armstrong explained.
