New details on woman who fled Fargo police by jumping into Red River

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Court documents have provided more information on the incident that led a woman to being arrested after jumping in the Red River.

Police noticed the woman, identified as 24-year old Shelby Goodman, riding a scooter on train tracks near the 1st Avenue bridge downtown, while they were reporting to a separate call.

When officers instructed Goodman to stop, she fled into a wooded area with tall brush. Police would search the area for about 15 minutes before one officer noticed pink hair with dark roots floating atop the river. Law enforcement would identify it as Goodman and instructed her to leave the river.

Goodman continued swimming northbound near the shoreline with an officer following behind for about 50 yards until she eventually stopped.

Fargo fire would remove Goodman from the water, officers would detain her, and transport her to Cass County Jail after medical clearance.

Officers spoke with Goodman at the jail asking if she knew she had any warrants and why she jumped in the river. Goodman answered by shrugging her shoulders to both questions. One of the few statements Goodman made before requesting a lawyer is mentioning a history of depression and other mental issues.

Goodman was told that she is being held in Cass County Jail for her warrants and charged with refusal to halt during the incident.
