ND Legislators: federal rural health care programs require special session

BISMARCK, N.D. – North Dakota legislative leaders says they will need a special session to handle $500 million in rural health care funds to be assigned by the federal government in the next five years.

The state will receive $100 million per year for five years under the Rural Health Transformation Program. The deadline to apply for the money is November 5. This gives the state limited time to put together a proposal on how it plans to use the funding.

One condition of the funding is it cannot be used to directly subsidize existing funding or cover costs that would be covered by insurance.

Legislative Management Chair, Senate Majority Leader David Hogue (R-Minot) announced a new committee Thursday, September 25 to review the federal Rural Health Transformation Program.
