Despite wanting to delay full-time mayor ‘indefinitely,’ Strand motions to approve full-time position

FARGO – The City of Fargo is one step closer to having a full-time mayor on its staff.

That’s despite a conversation Monday at the Fargo City Commission meeting by Commissioner John Strand, who requested the Commission approve delaying the position becoming full-time indefinitely.

“I know it’s in the budget for half of the year,” he said. “But we never acted on it is my point, and until we act on it, it’s not official.”

The Commissioners spent several minutes discussing the issue. In the end, Strand’s motion to delay failed 4-1.

“I think Fargo is ready for a full-time mayor,” City Commissioner Denise Kolpack said. “We’re North Dakota’s largest city. We’re not talking about a significant increase overall to the budget. It is earmarked in the budget, so the funds have been found.”

The approved budget has earmarked $25,000 for half a year – which would increase to $50,000 the next year.

Strand said he’s not running for mayor.

“I don’t have any vested interest in this,” he said. “Other people, that might affect their choices whether to run for mayor or other current candidates running. It’s a big part of their lives. How much of your career (do) you sacrifice to be a full-time mayor or a part?”

Later in the meeting, Strand made a motion to make the mayor’s job full-time beginning on June 1. Kolpack seconded the motion and it passed 3-2, with Michelle Turnberg and Dave Piepkorn voting against.
