MOORHEAD, Minn. (Valley News Live) – A Moorhead man faces a second-degree assault charge after a road rage incident escalated into a machete attack on November 1.

Abdirahaman Sulub, 39, allegedly assaulted a victim with a machete following a confrontation at Sulub’s home. Moorhead Police responded to the assault report near 34th Avenue South just before 6 p.m. The victim told authorities that Sulub had flipped him off repeatedly on I-94 while driving from Fargo to Moorhead.

The victim, who was heading to a friend’s house in Sulub’s neighborhood, decided to confront Sulub in his driveway. According to the victim, he asked Sulub, “What’s your problem?” Sulub allegedly responded with a threat, then retrieved a machete from his vehicle and slashed the victim’s left hand. As the victim retreated, Sulub reportedly smashed the front passenger window of the victim’s vehicle.

When interviewed by authorities, Sulub claimed the victim had been tailgating and driving erratically on the interstate. He stated he grabbed the blade in self-defense after the victim followed him home. A witness, who was a passenger in Sulub’s vehicle, agreeing with his account, stating the victim was following too closely on I-94 and she feared a collision.

Sulub is being charged with one count of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
