Tufte, Fair McEvers announce candidacy for N.D. Supreme Court Chief Justice

BISMARCK – Two justices on the North Dakota Supreme Court have announced their candidacy for the position of Chief Justice.

The two announcements come days after Chief Justice Jon Jensen announced he would not seek reelection to the post. His replacement must be a current justice on the state’s highest court.

Jerod Tufte and Lisa Fair McEvers both announced their candidacy.

Tufte has been on the Supreme Court since 2016. Prior to his service on the high court, he served as Legal Counsel to then-Governor Jack Dalrymple from 2011 until 2014, before being appointed a District Court Judge in 2014.

Fair McEvers has served on the high court since 2014, having been reelected to a 10-year term in 2018. Prior to serving on the court, she was appointed as a District Court Judge in 2010 and was elected to the position in 2012.

The Chief Justice is selected ‘by a vote of the sitting supreme court and district court judges’ and is appointed to a five-year term or until the time the justice’s term on the court expires – whichever comes first.
