Local Businesses Gear Up for Black Friday Rush

FARGO-MOORHEAD (Valley News Live) -Black Friday is less than a week away, and locally-owned businesses say they’re ready with new systems to keep lines moving and shoppers happy.

Red Wing Shoes has upgraded its checkout process this year.

“This year we’re using iPads. Before, we had one computer—now we can check out multiple customers at once, up to five transactions compared to just one last year,” Red Wing Shoes Sales Representative Brody Erickson said.

Beds By Design Fargo Mattress Factory has increased staffing to handle expected crowds.

“We’ve doubled up on staffing to make sure people are helped quickly and efficiently when they come in,” Beds By Design Store Manager Brandee Haakenson said.

Online shopping continues to grow

Stores also expect a continued shift online.

“We expect an increase—especially online. We’ve had a lot of recent orders online, ”Sales Associate at Minnesofa Joey Headrick said.

According to Adobe Analytics, U.S. mobile holiday spending is up 8.5 percent year-over-year to roughly $143 billion, as shoppers chase online discounts and use AI-powered chatbots.

Sales targets remain high despite economic pressures

Despite inflation and tariffs, local shops say they’re aiming for higher sales than last year. “We always plan for between 10 and 20 percent better than the previous year—that’s absolutely what we’re going for this year as well,” Haakenson said.

Adobe estimates total holiday spending up five percent year over year. To meet increased demand, stores say they’ve stocked deeper. “We definitely stocked up more to get as many boots and accessories out as possible,” Erickson said.

Deep discounts planned

Local retailers are offering significant markdowns. “We’ve marked down 20 to 30 percent this Black Friday—really good prices on sectionals,” Headrick said.

“Our mattresses are up to 50 percent off, depending on the line—generally between 20 and 50 percent,” Haakenson said.

Amid all the change, one thing is constant: Black Friday remains a crucial sales day for local businesses. “If you have a good product and position it well, Black Friday has a huge impact. It does for us every year—and we expect the same this year,” Haakenson said.
