Minnesota city partially reverses ban on sidewalk chalk art

ANOKA, Minn. – Some sidewalk chalk is legal again in Anoka, Minnesota.

The City Council amended an ordinance to allow water-soluble chalk drawings in public.

The 2021 ban on chalk art and other displays on public property drew national attention and protests over free speech. At the time, the City Council said the intention of the ban was to prevent the destruction of public property following the protests of the police killing of George Floyd.

Anoka now allows chalk on city sidewalks as long as it can be easily removed with water for drawings intended to last for less than 24 hours.
