SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Agriculture leaders and legislators say a healthy, thriving ag economy depends on the work of immigrants and guest workers here legally.
Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish said at a press conference at the Minnesota Capitol his members are afraid to make food deliveries in Minneapolis and it could be difficult to get farm workers on visas in the fall to work in rural areas.
“Our leaders should be working to strengthen rural communities and help address the crisis in farm country. This surge is not the solution. We still do not have a farm bill, but ICE saw its budget triple,” Wertish said.
DFL State Senator Rob Kupec of Moorhead said legal citizens in our area are afraid to send kids to school because if they’re taken into Border Patrol custody, they will be taken to Grand Forks.
He said how ICE is acting is counterintuitive to what the founding fathers thought this country should be about.
“When you read through the Declaration of Independence, and you get to the part of list of grievances against King George, go read that section and see if it doesn’t match up to what is happening in our country right now,” Kupec said at the press conference.
Flag Family News reached out to Kupec for specificity on his comments, but we didn’t immediately hear back.
President Donald Trump has called ICE agents “patriots” removing convicted criminals in Minnesota.
