CLEARWATER COUNTY, Minn. (Valley News Live) – A Bagley man is behind bars after he allegedly assaulted and disarmed officers during a traffic stop.
Daniel Johnson is facing charges of disarming a peace officer, fourth degree assault, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and obstructing the legal process.
On February 4, just after 10:30 p.m., a Clearwater County Deputy was on patrol when he said he noticed Johnson driving erratically, hitting fog lines and swerving to avoid hitting deer. The deputy activated his emergency lights, and conducted a traffic stop.
Documents say Johnson argued with the deputy about the traffic stop, and he had watery eyes and a strong odor of alcohol. He initially refused a sobriety test, but later agreed, and admitted to drinking at least three beers.
According to documents, another officer arrived on scene as Johnson was being placed under arrest.
During the arrest, Johnson allegedly became argumentative and aggressive, and pushed himself away from officers before hitting one of them in the face with a closed fist.
Documents state an officer then attempted to use his taser to stop Johnson, but Johnson grabbed it from him, and tased the officer’s hand.
Johnson was eventually handcuffed, and placed in custody, where he then complained about chest pains.
Documents say officers took him to the emergency room where he continued to be aggressive and hostile towards them.
According to documents, Johnson had two previous DWI convictions, one in 2014, and the other in 2016.
