FARGO, N.D. – Former North Dakota governor and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer believes the next mayor of Fargo will have a big challenge in creating a balanced budget.

Schafer, who lives in Fargo, would like to see someone become mayor who has extensive knowledge in finance, balance sheets and bonding.

“Do they have the backbone to stick up if you make a cut and you get public pressure or your mother-in-law jumps you in the grocery store and says ‘You shouldn’t do that!’ Do you have the backbone to build a plan, stick to it and get it done?” Schafer explained on “The Jay Thomas Show”.

Candidates for Fargo mayor are Deputy Mayor Denise Kolpack, City Commissioner Dave Piepkorn, Fargo Human Rights Commission Chair Sekou Sirleaf, Dem-NPL State Senator Josh Boschee and National Guardsman Jake Coulter.

Schafer urges voters to do research on all candidates’ positions and how they voted in the past well before the June 9 election.
