FARGO, N.D. – In addition to support from Commissioner Michelle Turnberg, interim Fargo Police Department chief Travis Stefonowicz has support from multiple groups within the department for a permanent appointment as the next leader of the Fargo Police Department.
“Interim Chief Stefonowicz has already demonstrated the leadership, judgment, and work ethic needed to guide our organization forward,” a letter from the department’s sworn and civilian staff read. “During his time serving as Assistant Chief, and now as Interim Chief, he has shown a strong understanding of the department and the needs of both the employees who work here and the community we serve.”
A letter from the sergeants at the department states Stefonowicz ‘is the right leader’ to serve the department.
“Based on our experience working with him over many years, we have a high level of confidence in Interim Chief Stefonowicz and the leadership he brings to this organization,” the sergeants wrote. “He is approachable and listens carefully, and he makes a genuine effort to understand the challenges faced by officers, supervisors, and staff.”
The lieutenants say the appointment of Stefonowicz as Chief ‘would provide stability for the Fargo Police Department while helping ensure the continued safety of our city and the well-being of our staff.’
“His leadership positions him to effectively manage the evolving public safety needs of our community while maintaining a steady and supportive environment for the men and women who serve within this department,’ the lieutenants wrote.
The three Division Commanders – Captains Matt Christensen, Troy Hannig and Travis Moser – say Stefonowicz is known for ‘fostering collaboration, encouraging transparency, and consistently modeling integrity in every aspect of his work.’
“His ability to connect with officers, community members, and partner agencies reflects a leadership style that builds trust and drives meaningful progress,” the commanders wrote.
The Fargo City Commission will consider Turnberg’s request for a permanent appointment of Stefonowicz as chief at Monday night’s Fargo City Commission meeting.
