U.S. sees first noted dip in overdose deaths in five years

(Atlanta, GA)  —  The number of overdose deaths is down across the U.S. for the first time in five years.

The CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics says about 107,000 people died from drug overdoses last year. That’s about 3,500 less than the year before. However, that’s still almost double the number from five years ago, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Synthetic opioids like fentanyl were involved in almost 70% of U.S. overdose deaths.
