Devils Lake Police officer accused of sexual assault before standoff

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Details on what led to a standoff in Devils Lake that ended with the suspect, an off-duty police officer, shooting himself in the head have been revealed in court documents obtained by Valley News Live.

According to these documents, police responded to 310 15th Avenue SE due to a 911 hang-up call. When they got on scene, they were informed by a victim that she had been sexually assaulted by Rey Hennen, a Devils Lake Police Officer who lived in that house.

Police arrived at Hennen’s house at 3:35 A.M. on September 9 to serve a search warrant for the reported sexual assault. During the execution of that warrant, Hennen put a gun to his head and threatened to shoot himself while holding his 11-month-old baby, according to court documents.

He eventually put the baby on the floor before retreating to the garage. Police note that there were three other children in the house during this incident.

Police set up a perimeter around the house, including outside of the garage containing Hennen and the gun. Around 9:30 A.M., Hennen allegedly fired the gun, shooting himself in the ear and sending a bullet through the garage door towards the street.

Hennan was arrested and was initially charged with terrorizing on September 10. He has now been charged with reckless endangerment with a firearm, as filed on September 25.
