Charity Swim-A-Thon to Benefit Local Student Athlete

(Fargo, ND) -- A chance to help one of Fargo's own in her fight against cancer.

The 10th annual Davies High School Swim-A-Thon is doing just that, taking on a more personal meaning for swim and dive athletes. On Saturday, February 6th, they will swim to help raise money for one of their fellow teammates. Last fall, Davies High School junior swim athlete Mara Olson was diagnosed with T-cell Leukemia, a rare and often aggressive form of cancer. Olson is now undergoing treatments for the next two a half years.

There's a twist to this year's event too, the Swim-A-Thon is normally a boys swimming and diving program event. This time, the team is partnering with the girls swimming and diving program to increase fundraising efforts to support Olson.

Swimmers and divers are currently raising pledges for total yards to swim and challenge levels for dives. Boys will swim and dive from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Girls will swim and dive from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Olson will receive 60% of the funds raised to pay for her medical bills, while the remaining 40% will be used to offset swim and dive team expenses.

Those wishing to donate directly to Olson can contact Davies Head Boys Swim Coach Jennifer Johnson via email at johnsoj9atfargo [dot] k12 [dot] nd [dot] us or by calling (218) 791-2895.

The nine years previous events has resulted in a total of $18,895 donated to local causes.
