Car Chase, Crash Leads to Brief St. Joseph School Lockdown

(Moorhead, MN) -- Panic spread after a car chase and crash Wednesday afternoon led to a local school being put on lockdown.

Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting says the chase began during an attempted traffic stop near Highway 10 from 30th Street. Traffic volume caused the Deputy pursuing the suspect to stop the chase.

A short time later, the suspect struck another car near the intersection of 11th Street and Main Avenue, fled through the Hornbacher's parking lot, then ditched the car near 10th Street and 2nd Avenue South.

St. Joseph went into a precautionary lockdown for roughly 20 minutes as deputies looked on foot for the suspect. The search was not successful.

Authorities say the person responsible for the chase and crash is known to law enforcement, and is not a danger to the public.
