Sanford Children’s Safe Kids Fargo-Moorhead Urges Parents to Check Car Seats and Correct Common Mistakes

(Fargo, ND) -- Sanford Children’s Safe Kids is offering free car seat safety checks and education to parents and caregivers on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sanford Children’s Southwest Clinic, 2701 13th Ave. S., Fargo. Appointments are preferred.

The event is part of Child Passenger Safety Week, which runs from Sept. 19-25 and includes instruction on how to install and use car seats correctly. Technicians will also help determine if your child is in the right seat for their age and size, and explain the importance of registering car seats with their manufactures so parents and caregivers can be notified if there is a recall.

Vehicles crashes are a leading cause of death and injury for American children and correctly used child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71%. Unfortunately, almost 60% of car seats are not used or installed correctly.

“Whether it’s a trip to the grocery store, back to school, or a long-distance road trip, correctly used car seats, booster seats and seat belts are the best way to make sure a family is properly protected,” said Katie Oelke, Sanford Children’s, Safe Kids manager.“ Our child passenger technicians are available to help every parent understand and take action to keep their child safe in their car seat.”

Throughout the pandemic, the Safe Kids team has continued to offer free car seat safety checks every Tuesday and Thursday by appointment. These appointments take place at the Sanford Children’s Car Seat Safety Center, 601 39th St. N, Fargo.
