(Fargo, ND) -- After a little over a week of deliberation, Cass County District Court Judge Stephanie Stiel ruled that Fargo's mayor can in fact run for another term.

Mayor Tim Mahoney had petitioned the court to be able to run for what in essence would be a third term in office. This after he took over following a special election in 2015 following the death of Fargo's previous mayor Dennis Walaker.

Mahoney, despite there being a rule in city code that prohibits a fifth term in city commission, argued his situation was ambiguous, and that many other similar circumstances across the country have resulted in the incumbent getting another run.

Dr. Mahoney ran unopposed in his last reelection bid in 2018, but may have numerous challengers come June of 2022. Fellow city commissioners Tony Gehrig and Dave Piepkorn are two of many who may throw their hats in the ring come summer of next year.
