(Bismarck, ND) -- North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem announced Friday that he won't seek reelection.  Stenehjem has served in the position for 21 years.  Upon completion of his term in 2022, he will become the longest serving Attorney Geneal in state history.  The 68-year-old describes the decision as "difficult".  He south the Republican nomination for Governor in 2016, but lost in the June Primary by 20 points.

Stenehjem commented on his retirement in a letter provided to WDAY Radio News.

"The citizens of North Dakota have seen fit to elect me to this important office six times and it has been an honor beyond measure. I hope North Dakotans will respect my work, my steadfast support of the US and State Constitutions, the rule of law, and efforts to keep North Dakota the best and safest place to live and work," wrote Stenehjem.

His current term runs through the end of 2022.
