Moorhead sales tax increase would raise nearly $40 million for new library and community center

(Moorhead, MN) -- Plans are taking shape for a brand new regional library and community center in the City of Moorhead.

"The City of Moorhead has never had a local option sales tax before.  We are one of the largest cities in Minnesota that has never had one and as we look at what the community needs and what the residents tell us they want, they want more amenities in the community," said Lisa Bode, Moorhead's Governmental Affairs Director.

Bode says the city council will soon decide whether to put a referendum before voters in November 2022.  The measure would add a half cent sales tax in the city to cover the cost of the project.  Bode says the existing library is "outdated".

If approved, the sales tax is expected generate roughly $31.5 million over an estimated 22 year period.

Possible locations for the project are under review.

Mayor Shelley Carlson has appointed a steering committee to come up with a vision for the project.
