(Moorhead, MN) -- Moorhead Public Service has picked up a key recognition, and is prepping for what's to come this Spring and Summer with Severe Weather.

MPS General Manager Travis Schmidt says the utility's Reliable Public Power Provider designation is truly special, mainly because they've been able to keep it since 2013.

“We couldn’t be prouder to be honored with this designation,” said Schmidt. “This is the culmination of a lot of hard work from a lot of people who really care about powering our community. But this designation is not a final destination. We are committed to continuing to look for ways to improve our operations and service to our customers.”

As for gearing up for high winds, storms and more this coming Spring, Schmidt says they have a few things in mind to keep damage to a minimum. "Simple things like fixing lines, replacing older power poles and tree trimming should make a difference," said Schmidt.

Schmidt did mention the possibility of putting all lines in use underground to completely avoid weather conditions, but added that project would take several years and cost tens of millions of dollars.
