Director of Public Safety for MSUM running for Moorhead City Council

(Moorhead, MN) -- A former Moorhead Police Officer and current Director of Public Safety at MSUM has announced his candidacy for Moorhead City Council.

In a statement released to WDAY Radio, Ryan Nelson announced his bid for Moorhead's First Ward Council seat.

Prior to working at MSUM, Nelson served in law enforcement for over 20 years, 17 of which were for the Moorhead Police Department. The former officer held many positions within the Police Department, such as Patrol Officer, Detective, and Patrol Sergeant.  

"My background will help facilitate and support strong law enforcement/public safety needs, public necessities such as roads, infrastructure, and community needs, as well as support and encourage relationships in order to continue on a path of growth for Moorhead," said Nelson in the statement.

Nelson moved to Moorhead when he was young and has called Moorhead home for over 30 years. His wife is currently employed with Moorhead Public Schools, and they have two children, one attending Park Christian School and the other attending  MSUM.

Nelson has also served and currently serves in many capacities within church, youth, and community programs. Most recently, he started serving as a member of the Moorhead Police Athletics and Activities League Oversight Board.
