(Moorhead, MN) -- One candidate running for the school board for Moorhead Area Public Schools says she wants to "keep authority in the hands of parents".

"The biggest thing that struck me was last summer and how the school board treated the parents when they tried to instill the mask mandate. So that was like a big red flag when I saw how they are trying to silence the voice of parents last summer," said Hahn.

Lisa Hahn says she is a former teacher in the district, teaching Special Education and English as a Second Language. Hahn says substandard student performance in the areas of third grade proficiencies and college readiness are not acceptable.

Hahn also says she's concerned with how identity politics are increasingly playing a role in public education. She says she wants schools to return to focusing on reading, writing and arithmetic. The first time candidate is the wife of Edwin Hahn, one of two men who currently claim the title of Chairman of the Republican Party in Clay County.

Hahn also criticizes what she calls a "hyper-focus" on race and gender issues within the district. The election is set for November 8th.
