"Near perfect if not perfect" rollout for new same day driver's license option at DVS office in Moorhead

(Fargo, ND) -- The time it takes to get a new driver's license at the Clay County Department of Motor Vehicles in Moorhead is now a lot faster.

"So I would say near perfect, if not perfect rollout. We've had success at both sites. Both opened on time. [They] have been providing and issuing credentials. We are actually really excited to hear that some folks are coming through and already are aware of this option," said Minnesota DVS Director Pong Xiong.

Xiong says the offices in Moorhead and Lakeville are giving drivers applying for licenses, the option of receiving their licenses on the same day. It's part of a pilot project approved by the legislature running through June 30th. Only standard class D driver's licenses and permits, and standard ID cards can be issued on the same day. Xiong says once data is entered into the system, it takes about 40 seconds to print a license. 

Xiong says the system could be rolled out statewide, depending on the results of the pilot program, and funding decisions by the state legislature.
