North Dakota First Lady Kathryn Burgum aims to help others struggling with addiction through "Recovery Reinvented"

(Fargo, ND) -- North Dakota First Lady Kathryn Burgum is gearing up to host the 6th annual Recovery Reinvented event.

"You can just never give up hope for recovery. That's what happened to me. I relapsed for a period of 8 years. I'm so grateful I didn't give up hope, because here I am today to work with other people and try to help," said Burgum.

For the first time this year, the conference will take place in Bismarck. With the theme "Advocacy in Action", the conference is aimed at providing an educational forum to talk about innovative responses to addiction. Burgum is a recovering alcoholic. She says the goal of Recovery Reinvented is to remove the shame and stigma of addiction.

"You know I did not reach out for help when I was active in my addiction. I didn't talk about my recovery for 15 years because of the stigma related to it," said Burgum.

The free event takes place Thursday at the Alerus Center. People can attend in person or online. Use the link below to register.

Burguam appeared on The Flag's "What's On Your Mind".
