(Fargo, ND) -- Fargo's police chief says recent "stay interviews" conducted among the department's officers and staff show improving morale and a better work culture.

"We are really happy to be a part of this process that really helps increase communications inside the department. We have to have the ability to address current issues and concerns. You know we have a very committed and solid team. We are in a much different place than we were a year ago," said Dave Zibolski.

Zibolski says interview results show areas that need improvement include staffing, along with some concerns related to pay and benefits. On the plus side, officers indicated they felt well-trained and properly equipped. They also see opportunities for growth and advancement in the department.

Mayor Tim Mahoney says the interviews are part of an overall effort aimed at improving communication, and says gaining such feedback won't be limited to the police department.

"The HR Department is going to be doing stay interviews throughout the City of Fargo, kind of consistent to try to find out what our employees are thinking, better communication plans and work together to make our city employees work environment which they're happy to be working with," said Mahoney.

The interview results are currently posted on the city's website.
