(Fargo, ND) -- Fargo Cass Public Health officials spoke to WDAY Radio about the city's chicken ordinance.
The rules surrounding ownership of chickens within city limits date back to May of 2017, when the City Commission changed Fargo's Municipal Code to allow residents to keep the animals. Frequently asked questions can be found by clicking here. General rules for the chicken ordinance include...
- Residents in Fargo can keep up to four female chickens at a time, with no roosters.
- Owners must provide a predator proof coop that is well ventilated, offers a minimum of four square feet per chicken, is not over six feet tall, and includes an outdoor enclosure with a minimum of 10 square feet per bird.
- Coops must be run in a back yard and at least three feet from other properties.
- Chickens cannot be slaughtered within the city.
