Otter Tail County Sheriff warns about gift card scam targeting businesses

(Fargo, ND) -- A warning is coming from the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Department about businesses being scammed in the county, including businesses in Fergus Falls.  

Investigators say phone scammers identify themselves as law enforcement officers, create a sense of urgency, and tell people to use business and personal funds to buy gift cards.

The victims are then asked to give the gift card numbers to the scammers, resulting in losses totaling "several thousands of dollars".  

Anyone who receives such a call is asked to notify law enforcement. The incidents are under investigation.
