Fargo Human Rights Commission passes ceasefire resolution

(Fargo, ND) -- Several Fargo government board members approved a ceasefire resolution presented to them on Thursday.

The Fargo Human Rights Commission approved a ceasefire resolution, which would condemn Israel for alleged genocidal actions in their war against Hamas in the Gaza strip. Speakers pointed to more than 1.5 million displaced Palestinians and about 30,000 dead Gazans and the International Court of Justice's case between South Africa and Israel on determining if the ongoing conflict is genocide.

“We applaud the City of Fargo human rights commission for unanimously adopting the resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza.” Lead organizers of CODEPINK Fargo-Moorhead and the greater Fargo community went on, “This is one major hurdle, now we call on the mayor of Fargo to listen to the people in charge of the human rights commission in our city, and support the resolution when it comes to him and the city commission.” 

Board chair Cody Severson says the resolution will be presented at the City Commission Meeting on Monday. Mayor Tim Mahoney said in previous conversations the city would not consider adopting a resolution because the issue is for national policy makers to decide, not for local governments.
