Armstrong signs bill giving $3 million toward building a Fargo Nat’l Cemetery welcome center

BISMARCK, N.D. – North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong has signed a bill that opens a $3 million line of credit for a welcome center at Fargo National Cemetery.

I’m glad to be joined by Senator John Hoeven, legislators and veterans to celebrate the funding of this project to honor our nation’s fallen heroes,” Armstrong said on X.

“There will be a chapel inside, there will be an office for the (Veterans Affairs) employee, there will be a break room for the honor guard, there will be indoor bathrooms, which will be very nice,” Jason Hicks with the Fargo Memorial Honor Guard said.

The cemetery has held funerals during winter without anything but a tent to block the cold and snow.

A bill in the Minnesota Senate would give a grant to help build a chapel and parking lot at the National Cemetery. The one-time funding would be given from the general fund to the Fargo Memorial Honor Guard in fiscal year 2026.

DFL State Senator Rob Kupec of Moorhead, who authored the bill, says the amount of money for the grant is still under consideration. He adds even though the cemetery is in North Dakota, it still serves Western Minnesotans.

The bill has been referred to the Agriculture, Veterans, Broadband and Rural Development committee where Kupec is vice chair. It has not had a hearing yet.
